So, why do people think that self-censorship is bad?

"Oh, but you're not really being yourself!"

Um, what? The censoring of *myself* as done by *me* does NOT come from an external source, so those inhibitions and censoring is PART of me, of who I am, so by doing so I am being MORE myself than if I were to take a part of me our (those inhibitions) and pretend they weren't there. THAT would be not being myself.
